Beauty and Crime
At the same time urban and elegant, Suzanne Vega (Santa Monica, 1959) analyzes in her lyrics and shows, like no one else does, the anatomy of her adoptive city, New York, and the contradictions, the tricks, the greatness and the misery of human nature. The exclusive staging of her latest work, Beauty and Crime - with which she opened the second edition of ÚNICAS in Madrid last October, and which this time around she’ll present in Barcelona on the closing night of our Festival – proves it quite clearly.
Since over two decades ago, her songs have been an example of passion, frustration, and all the desires that the heart is rarely able to see come true. And her characters reveal the tenderness of the person who conceived them with a half-smile and an indulgent, partner-in-crime look.
After a long absence from the stage – due to the death of her brother, Timothy, which caused her to sink into a deep depression and to break the contract with her record label – Suzanne was able to see the light at the end of the
tunnel, meeting face to face with her voice again and surprising everyone with her new compositions and with a sensitive, poetic album by which she certified once more why she is considered one of the best composers and lyricist in the last 25 years of pop music.
During the performance she will give to the Barcelona audience, Suzanne Vega will offer us her most creative melodies, from Tom’s Diner to Luka – the shivering account of the abuses inflicted to a child, which resonated all around the world - hover by her early love affairs with Gypsy, dig through stories of unlikely desires with Caramel and Pornographer’s Dream, explore the celluloid world with Marlene On the Wall and the recent Frank & Ava, tell us that New York is a woman and delight us with her new compositions. Suzanne Vega will exhibit her great artistic seduction, showing herself to be vulnerable at times, other times whispering or ironical, with all the depth of someone who knows the emotions of the human heart, in order to make us fall in love and move us after her prolonged absence. It is both an honour and a privilege to count on her awaited performance, exclusive to our Festival and to the Catalan audience.

+ russian red
The coming July 7th., the 4th. edition of ÚNICAS will come to an end. On this special night, Suzanne Vega will host Russian Red as supporting artist.
Russian Red is the colour of a lipstick produced by MAC, but also the name of the project led by Lourdes Hernández, a 22-year-old woman from Madrid who represents a new generation of musicians and, in these days, one of the best hopes for Eureka Discos.
Lourdes Hernández’s project began as the dream of a young girl, with her guitar and a handful of beautiful songs, until Eureka found the right formula to enhance her huge talent. Lourdes has been playing guitar since she was 15, but her passion for music has been manifest since she was much younger.
2006 was the year in which she set out to play bars in her hometown – Madrid – and it was in “Tres Tristes Trastes” that a new Lourdes sang her first set of songs under a new pseudonym. That was the day in which RUSSIAN RED was born.
