MARIANNE FAITHFULL’S
CONCERT CANCELLED

The organization of the Únicas Festival regrets to announce that Marianne Faithfull has suspended her 2008 tour upon medical request. For this reason, her concert, scheduled for next Monday June 2nd.as part of the Únicas Festival, has been cancelled. 

All tickets will be refunded at the box office of Palau de la Musica or through Telentrada from 28 may to June 28th. 2008 included.

Art mostly originates from sorrow, affliction, and torment. In many cases, the great female interpreters of almost every music genre –from soul to jazz,opera and rock – built their efforts on distress, sickness or devastation. From Billy Holiday or Bessie Smith, to Tina Turner or the current hit singer Amy Winehouse, a long series of outstanding artists has filled up the most distinguished pages of the history of music. A history that wouldn’t be complete without one of the most prominent artist of all ages, Marianne Faithfull.

She was the heroine of the 1960s London rock scene, the childlike voice which glorified As Tears Go By, the aristocrat who descended into hell. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and David Bowie fell at her feet in surrender.

Bob Dylan dubbed her la grande dame. She was the black leather muse in Girl on a Motorcycle, a movie directed by Jack Cardiff; “the angel with big tits” for Andrew Loog-Oldman - the Stones’ manager – and the grandmother who was sacrificed in Irina Palm.

Today, she’s the deep, intense voice of someone who sings from her soul, the beautiful and peaceful songwriter who experiments with new sounds, spanning from blues to jazz without neglecting her rock roots, and she keeps captivating with her strong, mesmeric, and temperamental presence.

She was the singer who had been chosen to open our Festival and to celebrate the hundred years of music and art in the Palau. We were all waiting for her. We knew she had recovered from a cruel illness, and she was seducing and captivating audiences once again with her rough, deep, emotional voice, with that look of hers, both sweet and ironic. This time, though, it won't be possible: right before raising Únicas' curtian, Marianne has been forced to suspend all her performances scheduled for 2008 upon medical request.

Those of us who love and admire her will be capable of waiting for her, and if this year she hasn't been able to come, she will do it the next, since we are confident that Marianne is going to recover in time to open the fifth edition of the Únicas Festival in 2009.

Our affection and admiration will stay by her side, and our stage will always be waiting for her.

Due the cancelation of Marianne’s Faithfull show, Únicas in cooperation with Fundació Orfeó Català - Palau de la Música Catalana will project Marianne’s Faithfull “Live In Hollywood” as a courtesy by Eagle Rock Entertainment.
